Seriously, though, I’m so grateful for these last four days exploring the Algarve with my dear Swiss friends Jo & Val!! Sevilla to Tavira to Faro is a pretty easy journey (we took buses & trains) & everywhere is so beautiful. It was HOT (omg, it was so hot) but it was worth every second.

Jo and I have been traveling together for more than half our lives (thanks to our favorite beige island (Malta, of course!) for bringing us together in 2004!!). I’ve known Val since she came as Jo’s +1 to our wedding in 2013 (and then joined us on our honeymoon 🤭) Human connections like these don’t come across like this every day…and I don’t know what I did to get so lucky, but wow, I am luckyšŸ’•

Thank you to my amazing husband Ryan (who will never see this because he’s not on social media!!!) for always encouraging me to take the trip & spending the week with our kids. He will need a very good souvenir šŸ˜„

Happy Memorial Day!! Loved exploring the Gila Wild Happy Memorial Day!! Loved exploring the Gila Wilderness this weekend in New Mexico with some of my very favorite humans ā˜€ļø We hiked Cherry Creek Trail in Pinos Altos, went to a curio shop where almost nothing was for sale (that’s a forthcoming essay in itself!), had drinks at the Buckhorn Saloon, the only surviving saloon in town (it opened in 1803!), walked the precarious Catwalk, played board games on rainy mornings, and visited the Gila Cliff Dwellings of the ancient Puebloan people. And cooked lots of meals and stayed up too late and let our kids run around barefoot in the forestā¤ļø

I posted this sentiment on my stories yesterday, but I’m so happy we finally got to have a trip that *almost* felt like they used to - our kids hiked with us, got along so well with each other, & went to bed at reasonable hours 😜 I’m feeling really good about taking more trips with our kids (this is new for me - it’s hard to admit this out loud, but I found traveling with infants and toddlers really tough & just completely exhausting). Is that normal? Anyway, this beautiful trip made me feel like we can really do this thing šŸ’Ŗ And it was so good to be with friends I’ve adored & traveled with since we were early 20-somethings learning to be writers in grad schoolā¤ļø

Happy to share I have a new flash essay (ā€œflashā€ b Happy to share I have a new flash essay (ā€œflashā€ being a piece of nonfiction under 300 words) in this issue of @panorama_journal! To me, the beauty (and challenge) of writing travel flash is that it must bring together moments of a day that might otherwise never meet (a man on a train and a dish you eat; a building you pass by and a memory of the past; a reflection on fleeting moments and a street seller you meet, etc.), it must pay attention to natural metaphors, and it must be super restrained in ways travel writing usually isn’t. It’s very against my nature to write this way, by the way! So I don’t know if I achieved these things, but here it is. This piece is about a trip I took to the town of Bisbee, AZ in February - an old mining town on the US/MX border that’s considered one of the most haunted towns in the Southwest šŸ’• @discoverbisbee

The other pieces in this issue are gorgeous and wonderful—go read them!

Things started to feel better after our first progressive dinner, when I met my neighbors & found out that all of our wood ceilings pop at night and make weird noises ā¤ļø

Mexico City šŸ‡²šŸ‡½ was a beautiful blur in the very be Mexico City šŸ‡²šŸ‡½ was a beautiful blur in the very best way! I spent a week with my very dear friend Alba from Malta and her husband Andres (who is now my friend, too!). They just moved to La Juarez near Roma Norte & La Condesa. We did so much in a week, from just walking around the cobblestone streets & super cute neighborhoods to talking for hours & hours in cafes….but we did some tourist stuff, too :)

My fave restaurants (oh my gosh, so many) were Chui for vino naranja, Cafe Nin for cardamom pastries, Cafe Maque for muffins de elote, Paramo for upscale tacos & cute ambiance, Terraza Cha Cha Cha for quesabirria & espresso martinis & rooftop views, Oaxaquito for tyaludas & tejate, Cafe Petrea for a cafe vibe in a bookstore, Pulque La Nuclear for grungy/cool pulque experience, and El Minutito for croissants 🄐

Tip: always, if you can, take the trip & spend time with your lifelong friends šŸ’• And bring some really yummy mezcal back for your rockstar husband, too 😘
